Hello Parents, Family Members, and Supporters of our SCU Students!
Midterms are in full swing as we approach the end of week 6. Have you checked in on your students? Ask them how they're handling stress, if they're taking advantage of the beautiful 70-80 degree weather outside, and what they're excited about for the summer.
As always, this newsletter is designed to share insight into life at SCU and equip you with valuable information to support your students throughout their college journey. The content presented in this newsletter has been previously communicated to your student through email, at a resource fair, or is available on the SCU website. In this edition, you will learn about:
- Services offered by the Campus Safety Team
- The Hub Writing Center and how they support students
- Mandatory advising requirements before students can register for Fall courses
- The School of Engineering’s Senior Design Conference
- Cultural celebrations hosted by our multicultural clubs
If you haven't already, join the Bronco Family Network, our new platform for parent and family communication. Nearly 600 parents and family members have already started customizing their experience to receive relevant information for them and their students. Be sure to log in and complete your profile to stay updated on upcoming deadlines, explore campus resources, and find events tailored to your student's journey. Starting this summer, the hub will become our main mode of communication with all of you!
Finally, I'd like to extend a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and mother figures in our Bronco community. Thank you for your unwavering support and everything you do for your students! We appreciate you.
Should you have any feedback on the content of this newsletter or specific requests for future editions, please don't hesitate to contact me via email at sponce@scu.edu.
Cheers!

Guardians of SCU: Ensuring Safety and Support Around the Clock
Campus Safety Services (CSS) works collaboratively across divisions and departments to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all members of the university community. Operating around the clock, CSS serves students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests.
Primary responsibilities
- Crime Prevention: Encourage community vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities to CSS is crucial for maintaining campus safety. Remind your students about the importance of including detailed descriptions of the person(s), their clothing, direction of travel, and any associated vehicle, bicycle, or mode of transportation, when making reports to CSS. This information is critical for effective response and ensuring the safety of everyone on campus.
- Emergency Planning: Promote resilience and preparedness through training and awareness programs to effectively address emergencies.
- Daily Crime and Fire Log: Maintain a detailed record of criminal incidents, alleged incidents, and fires reported to CSS or Campus Security Authorities.
- Parking & Transportation: Oversee parking and transportation services for SCU community members and visitors. The main office is conveniently located on the North side of the Main Parking Structure.
Student services
- Lockouts: Assist on-campus residents locked out of their rooms during Housing Office closure hours, typically after 5 PM on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Vehicle Services: Offer jump starts for vehicles with dead batteries and attempts to unlock vehicles for owners who have locked their keys inside, with some limitations for newer locking systems and requiring a signed liability waiver.
- Security Escorts: Drive students to and from SCU property during nighttime hours or upon request, with limitations on the distance depending on staffing and activity levels. This service is NOT available for destinations such as bars, parties, or for running errands.
- Lost & Found: Oversee the University’s main lost and found service, with found items kept in the Campus Safety main office.
Take a look at their frequently asked questions for more information. If you still have questions, you can reach the team at campussafety@scu.edu. You can also email the Director of CSS, Phil Beltran, at pjbeltran@scu.edu.
Improving Student Writing: One Assignment at a Time
The HUB Writing Center offers valuable support for students at every stage of the writing process. Staffed by trained writing partners, The HUB assists with idea development, planning, clarity, analysis, organization, and more. Whether students need help brainstorming ideas or refining their public speaking presentations, The HUB is there to help.
It's important to note that The HUB is not an editing service. Instead, they focus on helping students become better writers. Writing partners work with students to self-identify and self-correct errors, focusing on addressing recurring issues rather than providing line-by-line edits. Sessions typically last 30, 45, or 60 minutes to ensure a focused and productive experience. Students are encouraged to book additional sessions if they need further assistance with an assignment.
The HUB Writing Center is open Sunday through Thursday from 4pm-10pm and will have regular hours through June 7th (the Friday before finals begin). While students are encouraged to drop in at any time during the HUB’s operating hours, they can also make appointments using the HUB’s scheduling system.
Reminders for a Successful Fall Course Registration
To ensure students receive guidance on their progress towards graduation, they must complete academic advising before registration. Once the advising appointment is finished, the registration hold will be lifted from your student’s account.
Different colleges and schools handle mandatory advising differently. If this applies to your student, they will receive additional emails via their SCU email address. For instance, Denise Ho, the Leavey School of Business (LSB) Senior Director of Academic Advising, will send information to LSB students about who to contact for their advising appointment.
Mandatory Advising: Key Information for Your Student
Scheduling Appointments:
- LSB first-year students and School of Engineering first-year students must meet with their respective peer advisors.
- Undeclared students can schedule an appointment with a Drahmann Center Advisor to remove their advising hold.
Tips to Prepare for Advising Meeting:
- First-Year Students: Concentrate on lower division Core and major prerequisites.
- Second-Year Students: Declare a major and/or Pathway if not already done, and plan for remaining Core and major requirements.
- Third-Year Students: Review remaining Core and major requirements and plan for completion within the next year.
Regarding Financial Aid:
- Plan your fall schedule to meet financial aid eligibility requirements by enrolling in courses that count towards degree completion.
- Contact One Stop at 408-551-1000 for financial aid counseling appointments.
If you student has any questions, they should reach out to the Drahmann Center at drahmanncenter@scu.edu or 408-554-4318.
